What Declaring the MIKE Actually Means:

Let’s clean up the misunderstanding first.

Declaring the MIKE is not identifying the middle linebacker by position.

It is setting the protection count.

It is organizing the math.

Young quarterbacks often think the MIKE is simply:

• The guy in the middle

• The one wearing the green dot

• The loudest linebacker

That’s not how protection works.

The MIKE is the starting point of the count.

It tells the offensive line who we are building protection around.

That’s it.

When you declare the MIKE, you are not naming a position, you are defining structure.
